MGT 286 - MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS & TECHNOLOGY

A. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Strategic use, application, and management of information systems and technology to improve the organization

(3 units; 5.33 hours lec/lab per week)

Prerequisite: It is assumed that you have at least one prior course in information technology/information systems and have work experience involving information technology in the business context.

B. COURSE OBJECTIVES

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

1. Understand the need of managers to get involved in information technology, strategic planning, and project implementation
2. Develop an effective information systems strategic plan that highlights effective use of IT to support business objectives
3. Understand the project management process
4. Discuss the major business reasons for outsourcing as well as its pitfalls
5. Describe the responsibilities and practices that an organization uses to ensure delivery of real value from IT to ensure that related risks are managed appropriately
6. Understand the fundamentals of electronic communications systems, wireless and mobile communications
7. Discuss the use of electronic business methods to buy and sell goods and services, interact with customers, and collaborate with business partners and government agencies
8. Explain what an ERP system is and the “best practices” approach to its implementation
9. Discuss the wide range of applications that help businesses gather and analyze data to improve decision making
10. Describe explicit and tacit information and how organizations use knowledge management to identify, select, organize and disseminate information
11. Describe the use of enterprise architecture to establish a series of reference frameworks that define necessary business and IT changes
12. Gain awareness of the security, social, legal and ethical issues in information systems and the Internet
13. Process data using electronic spreadsheet software
14. Design databases and implement it in a database application program
